Our Merciful and Faithful High Priest
Jesus is our Lord and Savior. Also, He is our merciful and faithful High Priest. In the Old Testament the High Priest of Israel would enter the Holy of Holies to sprinkle the blood of the lamb on the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant to atone for the sins of the people. He had to do it every year. However, Jesus came into this world to become our High Priest, so He could shed His precious blood for our sins, once and for all. (Hebrews 2:17) At Christmas, we celebrate the beginning of this process.
Jesus is God. He has existed eternally as God, and He will always be God. However, to be our High Priest He had to be God and man. He came to be born of the virgin Mary to become like us, His brethren, so that He might be merciful and faithful. He could not only understand our plight, but He experienced all we experience in life, except He never sinned. Then, when He went to the cross, He hung between God and man. He was God, but also man, so He could bring us to God through the shedding of His blood. He took our punishment, He paid for our sins, and He made the way for us to be reconciled to God. Praise the Lord for our Merciful and Faithful High Priest. Let's remember this truth this Christmas and all year long.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Hebrews 3-5.
