Like Sheep Without a Shepherd

Moses cared deeply for the people of Israel. When the time came for him to die, he made a special request to the Lord that showed his great love for them. He asked for God to select a leader, so the people would not be like sheep without a shepherd. (Numbers 27:15-17) This request shows us about God and about ourselves.

God is the One who select the leaders of His people, because He knows the spirit of every person, and He knows the gifts He has given them. Therefore, we all need godly leaders that have been selected by God to direct us. Even leaders need other leaders to keep them accountable and to sharpen them. If we think we do not need God's leaders, so that we go forward on our own, we will certainly miss God's perfect will, because God works through His leaders.

Sheep without a shepherd are lost, when it comes to being fed, watered, and protected from harm. We all should be humble enough to admit this need and to seek out leaders. It is not a bad thing to be like a sheep. It is an accurate illustration of our human condition. Jesus used this phrase in the New Testament. It gives us a great reminder that we must not be proud, but we must submit fully to God's order and His way of guiding people in His kingdom.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Numbers 30-32.
