An Unusual Cure
When the people rebelled against God once again, God sent poisonous serpents to kill them as their punishment. Moses cried out to God for a cure for this terrible situation. God told Moses to make a fiery serpent and to put it on a pole. Then, when anyone was bitten, he could look at the bronze serpent, and he would live. (Numbers 21:8) That was a very unusual cure, but it was very effective. I believe it teaches us a great lesson.
God responds to our faith. The cure was not in the fiery serpent. The cure was in trusting God's provision. When a person had faith to believe God and look at the serpent on the pole, he was healed. The cure did not make sense, but it always makes sense to have faith in God's word to us.
That fiery serpent was a type or a symbol of Jesus. Jesus was lifted up on the Cross to die for us. God's directions to us are to believe in the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus to forgive our sins. It may not make sense, but that is what God gave as the cure for our sin problem. Therefore, if we act in faith, we will be healed from sin and given eternal life.
Now, I know there are reasons why Jesus' death and resurrection are effective in removing our sins, if we trust Him. However, it is not having the understanding of it that saves us, but it is the faith God sees. Then, He applies the cure as a free gift of His grace.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Numbers 22-25.
