The Churches Multiplied, Too
As Christians we are to multiply, and the same is true for churches. (Acts 9:31) The purpose of the church is not to simply get bigger and bigger. God's plan for churches is that they multiply themselves, too, so the whole world will be filled with healthy churches. Let's look at this verse.
After the persecution arose in Jerusalem, so that the believers were scattered out over Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, churches began to spring up wherever they went. Then, after the conversion of Saul, Luke gave a summary of how these churches were doing. They had peace. They were able to share the gospel and to disciple the new believers without persecution. They were edified, which means they were built up. They church membership grew larger, and the people grew stronger in the Lord, so that they were walking in the fear of the Lord. They did what the Lord led them to do, and they had the comfort of the Holy Spirit to strengthen them and guide them in all things. All of these things being true, the churches multiplied like the believers were multiplying.
God called out more pastors. The people kept winning people to the Lord. The Lord led them to begin more and more churches in local communities, as the gospel spread. Then, those churches started more churches, so the multiplication continued. Our church today must do the same things if we are going to reach America and the world with the Gospel. Yes, believers must multiply, but churches must be multiplied too.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Acts 10-12.
