Why Obey Men, but Not God?
God led Jeremiah to use the Rechabites as an example of an obedient people. They obeyed their father, Jonadab, who taught them not to drink wine or build houses, but to dwell in tents. (Jeremiah 35:14) After many years, they were still faithful to obey his words. However, God's people were not obedient to Him, even though He had spoken to them often in various ways. We need to hear this lesson, too.
How many things do you do, because another human being told you to do them? It could be that you were taught by your parents, your teachers, or by authors of books. Then, consider how many things you do because God told you in His Word or as He spoke to you in your heart?
If most of what we do is because of what we were taught by other people and not God, we have a huge problem. This is especially true when we are obeying the teachings of people that contradict the Word of God. We must be careful to never let that happen. We must order our lives to listen to God's Word and His voice, so that we obey what He says, even when it is against the ways people think or what they have taught us.
Please, take time to reflect on this lesson. I could give many examples of this, but it is more important for each of us to make a personal application of this truth, so that we clean out our lives of human teachings that contradict the Word of God.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Jeremiah 36-38.
