The Power of the Blood

The final plague for the Egyptians was the death of the firstborn of all humans and animals in the entire country. The Bible tells us that there was not an Egyptian family that did not have at least one death that night. However, the Israelites were protected by the blood of the lambs that were killed, one for each household. As the blood of the lamb was painted onto the lintel and doorposts with the stalk of hyssop, God would see the blood and pass over that house, so that the destroyer would not strike those in that house.(Exodus 12:23) There was power in the blood then, and there is power in the blood now.

It is very clear that the blood of the lamb placed on the top of the door and on the door posts was a picture of Jesus hanging on the Cross, shedding His precious, powerful blood for us. He bled from His head because of the crown of thorns, which was like the blood on the lintel, and His hands were nailed to the cross, so that the blood flowed freely, like the blood on the two posts of the door. What a picture God gave the Israelites almost 1,500 years before Jesus died on the cross for all mankind!

Now, when we trust Christ as Lord and Savior, the blood is applied to our lives, so that we are protected from the destroyer. We are safe under the blood of Jesus. We still have challenges, pains, and problems, but we belong to Him forever. The Passover was just the beginning of freedom for Israel. They had a long way to go trusting the Lord. When we trust Christ, it is just the beginning of our freedom in Christ, as we trust Him daily the rest of our lives. However, it all began with the blood of the Lamb, shed for the sins of the world. Oh, the power of the blood.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Exodus 14-16.
