God is Unique and Unchangeable
There are two basic truths when it comes to knowing the One True God. He is unique, and He does not change.(Job 23:13) If we do not grasp these two truths about Him, we will always be making mistakes in trying to relate to Him. Let me explain.
Since God is unique, we can't come to Him with any preconceived notions about what He is like. We can't rely on things that we know to show us who He is. If we think, "Oh, God is a Father, so He is like my father, and He does what my father would do," we will miss some of who God is, because He is a unique and perfect Father like no other. The same is true if we try to ascribe characteristics to Him from anything we know. They are all limited, so that we must allow God to show us Himself through His Word and by the power of the Holy Spirit, so that we see Him as He is, and not as we think He might be.
Also, God doesn't change, so we can't change God. God is perfect, so if He changed, it would mean He was not perfect before the change or after the change. Since He is perfect, He always does the right thing in the right way, so why would we try to change God. However, our tendency is to try to get God to do things our way. That would require Him to change, because His ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts.(Isaiah 55:8,9) Many people get so angry with Him or discouraged when they pray for their will to be done, and it fails to happen. If we will be convinced that God does whatever He desires, and it is always right, we will stop praying like that and expecting those things.
We should be glad that there is no other God like Him. All of the gods that people have made up are based on what they know or think. They are not unique, and they can change. However, the True God, the God of the Bible never changes. Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever.(Hebrews 13:8)
Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 25-27.
