Seeing is Believing, but for How Long?

I can't imagine being in a group of two million former slaves walking across the Red Sea on dry ground and then, seeing the mighty Egyptian army totally destroyed as the waters returned to normal. To call it a great work is an understatement in my opinion. However, that experience led the Hebrews to fear the Lord and to believe in Him and His servant Moses.(Exodus 14:31) Unfortunately, the fearing and believing did not last too long. We read that it took about 3 days for the complaints to start. It seems that this group would believe for a while, and then revert to their unbelief. It was a spiritual roller coaster. I believe that grieves the Lord to see anyone do that.

Fearing God and exercising faith in Him is meant to be a constant trust. It is not supposed to have such drastic swings. I know it is in line with human nature, but I think there is something lacking, too. We are to believe in the Lord and fear Him because of who He is, not just the great works He does. The great works are to show us His character. Then, it is up to us to fear Him and trust Him as Almighty God, the Lord of all. We must not base it on what we see or what we get. He is the Lord. That is why true faith lasts, and the kind of faith that is based on seeing miracles doesn't last.

When people look at us, I pray they see us fearing God and believing Him 24/7 and 365 days a year from the time we place our faith in the Lord. Only that kind of living and lasting faith honors the Lord.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Exodus 17-19.
