When Our Worship is Noise
Some people will only worship if they have one particular type of music. They consider the other types noise. I do not believe that is how God feels. He likes all types of music for worship, if it is in line with His Word and His character. However, there are some songs that are just noise to God. In fact, there are a lot of them. It is any song sung by a person or a group of people who do not live lives that are full of justice and righteousness.(Amos 5:23,24) God will not even listen to their stringed instruments when the music is supposed to be for Him.
Worship must proceed from our hearts to please God. Our worship must flow out of our recognition of Him as Lord. If we sing about the Lord, but we don't live as He directs us to live, our worship is on the wrong key. It is out of harmony with the Lord. It is noise to Him.
You may have heard this verse on the news or in a history lesson which reported on the famous speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. However, did you know the context from the book of Amos? Did you know it was speaking about what God is looking for in His children? He is expecting us to live by His truth and apply it to all situations and people. That is justice. He is expecting us to live by His Word in all we do, say, and think, so that our hearts and lives are right with Him and others. That is righteousness. God desires for us to display justice and righteousness in abundance, like the waters of a mighty stream. When that is the case, He loves the sweet sound of our songs of praise. We honor Him with our mouths, our hearts, and our lives. Our Worship Team at NHBC leads us in a song called "Does Our Worship Have Hands?" which perfectly embodies the truth of these verses.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Amos 7-9 and Obadiah.
