Leadership Is Important
Moses knew it. The Lord knew it, too. Leadership is important. People need leaders like sheep need shepherds. Therefore, when Moses was about to die, he asked God to appoint a new leader for God's people.(Numbers 27:16,17) That was a very wise request that was filled by the commissioning of Joshua as the new leader.
Sheep which do not have a leader suffer. They suffer from a lack of unity, direction, protection, and provision. They get separated by going their own way. They do not know which way to go. They are open to attacks from predators. They do not know where to find food and water. In short, sheep without a shepherd will die, or at least, they will not be productive.
It is the same with God's people, since we are like sheep in many ways. When there is no leadership, there is a lack of unity. People argue about which direction the church should go. Even Christians fall prey to false teachers, if they do not have clear leadership in doctrine and practice. They do not get fed spiritually, so they get weak. That is why God gives pastors to churches. It is not a position of superiority. It is a position of leadership which requires staying in touch with the Holy Spirit, so that the pastor can lead the flock in God's way and provision.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Numbers 28-30.
