An Understanding Heart
God asked the new king of Israel, Solomon, to ask for one thing, and He would give it to him. Solomon could have asked for anything like riches and fame, but he asked for "an understanding heart."(I Kings 3:9,10) His request pleased God so much that God gave him riches and fame in addition to giving him more wisdom than anyone who has ever lived. That tells us a lot about Solomon and God.
God loves for us to seek after wisdom. Read the beginning of the book of Proverbs, if you doubt me. He knows that all true wisdom comes from Him, and when we find it, we will be inclined to do His will. Also, in finding wisdom we draw nearer to Him.
Solomon knew he could not lead the people by himself. He was humble enough at this point in his life to admit his weakness. This is the sign of a wise man, he knows what he doesn't know. He doesn't focus on the little he does know, and think he is a special person. Solomon's attitude and request pleased God. We will please God, too, if we have that humility and dependence on God for every decision.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Kings 5-8.
