A Godly Heritage
Caleb was a faithful follower of God.(Joshua 14:14) His life honored the Lord from the beginning to the end. He passed on a godly heritage to His children and to the generations of believers who have come after him.
At the age of 40 he was sent to spy out the Promised Land with the group of 12 spies. He and Joshua were the only two who gave a good report and told the people to go ahead and conquer the land in God's power. He stood up for the Lord against the majority. He did not compromise on his faith in God.
Then, he waited 40 more years to enter the Promised Land, because of the unfaithfulness of his generation. He did not give up on God. He remained faithful, and he wholly followed God as they wandered in the wilderness waiting for a whole generation to die. He was a leader to the younger generation of how to follow the Lord.
Finally, when Caleb was 85 years old, he received his portion of the Land as an inheritance. He was given Hebron because of his faithfulness. He gave a stirring testimony about how God had preserved his strength, so that after 45 years, he was just as strong as the day he went to spy out the land. This was God's blessing on His servant Caleb, who wholly followed Him.
Just think of his family and the other inhabitants of Hebron. They could point to Caleb as the one who had faith and strength to conquer the giants of Hebron. They could hold him up as a wonderful example of trusting God and the rewards of God. He passed on a godly heritage. All of us should strive to do the same for our family and neighbors.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Joshua 17-20.
