Keeping The Charge Of The Lord
The end of Numbers 9 is an interesting description of how God guided the Israelites while they were in the wilderness. The cloud was over the tabernacle during the day, and the pillar of fire was over it at night. The Lord directed them to move by lifting the cloud or the fire and leading them to their next destination. Upon arriving the cloud or the fire would come down, so they knew to stop. This could happen at any time, so they had to be watchful and ready to go or to stop.
Numbers 9:23 says, "They kept the charge of the Lord..." This simply means that they kept watching to see where God was directing them, and they were careful to follow every movement of the cloud or the fire. They went nowhere without His direction. I believe there is a message for all of us in this verse.
Have you kept the charge of the Lord? Are your spiritual eyes trained on Him? Is your heart sensitive to His directions? If we fail to keep His charge, we will get off of the straight and narrow way. We can get so far from where we should be that we can't find our way back to Him without much difficulty. God will make our way clear, if we submit to Him and keep His charge.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Numbers 11-13.
