The Greatest of All
God selected the tribe of Levi to play a very special role in the life of the Israelites. Aaron's family was a part of the tribe of Levi. They served as priests before the Lord in the tabernacle and later in the Temple. The rest of the tribe of Levi was presented to Aaron and to all of the Israelites to be servants in the ministry of the tabernacle.(Numbers 3:6,7) This was a very high calling.
The Bible makes it clear that God chose the Levites to be set apart for His service. They did not serve in the army. They did not have an inheritance in the Promised Land. The Lord was their inheritance, and He provided for them. This shows us the heart of God for service and for servants.
Jesus told His disciples that the greatest of all was the servant of all. God does not count rulers as the highest ranking position among men. He puts servants at the top. "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many."(Mark 10:45) Jesus was a servant of all. The Levites were servants of all. We should be servants of all, too. It is a privilege to be used by God to minister to others for Him.
Therefore, the Levites were the greatest tribe. They were not the kings. They were the servants. They were not even the priests. They could not even look at the holy furnishings of the tabernacle until they were wrapped up by the priests. However, they were privileged to carry them for the Lord and for the people. They got a special reward for their humble service. That reflects the heart of God. He loves service and servants.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Numbers 5-7.
