All These Things will be Dissolved

I guess I shouldn't write about this at Christmas, but I am not trying to be harsh, just truthful. As I read the end of II Peter this morning, I came across the verses that remind us of God's plan for this world.(II Peter 3:10-13) The heavens and the earth will be burned up with a fervent heat, so God can create new heavens and a new earth. The new ones will not be stained by sin. They will be unaffected by the corruption that was brought into all of the creation by Adam and Eve's sin. God is not just going to save people from their sins and take them to heaven when they come to know Christ, He is going to rid the entire universe of the effects of sin. God hates sin that much.

"Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness?"(II Peter 3:11) That is a great question, isn't it? If all of the material world and all of our material possessions are going to be burned up, what should we put our time and effort into in this life? Of course, the answer is that we should emphasize eternal things. What is eternal? People are eternal. Instead of investing in stuff, we should invest in the lives of people, so they can come to live eternally in heaven with the Lord, instead of in eternal punishment, separated from Him forever. It is the only endeavor in life that will endure to the new heavens and the new earth. That is what Jesus urged us all to do in the Sermon on the Mount. Let's not waste time on things that will be burned up. Let's invest in the souls of men and women, boys and girls.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I John 2-4.
