The Source of Conviction
John 16:8-11 tells us that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. This verse explains one of the jobs of the Person of the Holy Spirit. He convinces people of their sin, of what is right, and of the fact that one day there will be a time of judgment for everyone. Perhaps, He has spoken to you about one of these areas recently. It is very important that we listen to Him well. His instructions are for our own good.
If He shows us that we have sinned and that we need forgiveness through trusting Christ as our Lord and Savior, we must not ignore Him or scoff at Him. He is bringing us the truth about the only way to have our sins forgiven once and for all. Don't try to ignore sin or the Lord. That is foolishness.
When the Spirit shows us the right thing to do, we must not choose our own option. His way is the way of righteousness before God. He shows us what Jesus would do, and that is the true righteousness.
Also, He will convince us of the judgment. After all, we have tests in school. Why would we not have a test from God? It is not about our sins. It is about the opportunities the Lord has given us in life to follow Him and to know Him. We will have to give our reasons for doing our own thing. It will not be a very pleasant time, if we have to tell God that we thought our way was better than His way.
All of these things are why I say that we need to listen to the Holy Spirit when He convicts us. It is His job, and He is good at it. The more we ignore Him or scoff at Him, the harder our hearts become, and the easier it becomes to not obey Him. That is the worst life decision we can make. Knowing Christ and following Him fully is the best decision, and that is why the Spirit is showing these things to everyone in the world.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Matthew 2-4.
