A Broken Spirit
This morning we discovered something from Proverbs while we were studying the story in Luke 13 about Jesus loosing the lady from the spirit of infirmity that had her bent over for 18 years. You might call it "chasing a rabbit." However, it is good to chase rabbits if they have "meat" on them.
Proverbs 15:13 declares that "By sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken." Having a broken spirit is a serious condition. It is our spirit that relates to God. When we get in a depressed state, we have difficulty hearing from God. This affects us physically, as well. Proverbs 17:22 says, "... a broken spirit dries the bones." The bones are significant to health, because they make the blood. The Bible tells us that the life is in the blood. When our blood is not right, our health is affected badly. Therefore, it is important for us to overcome depression by the power of God, and let the power of a merry heart loose in our lives. The same verse says, "A merry heart does good like a medicine." When we are joyful, our immune system works better, and we are healthier overall. Isn't it amazing how God made us, body, soul, and spirit with each one affecting the other? We are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Galatians 4-6.
