Losing the House
We had a good Men's Bible Study this morning. We finished Jesus' message on the plain at the end of Luke 6. Our focus was on Jesus' conclusion. He told the story of the house built with the foundation on the rock and the house built on the dirt with no foundation. The intention of the story is quite obvious even today. Jesus was talking about the total destruction of the house when the floods came, and the house represented the life of a person. He was warning his audience and us about the lifestyle that leads to destruction. He was very serious about getting His point across. Do you want to lose your house? If not, you better hear what Jesus said.
He told us that anyone who hears His words but does not do them is on the road to losing the house. Of course, there are many people who have never even heard His Word, so they too are in danger of building their lives with no firm foundation and losing it all. The key is acting on the truth and putting it into action in our lives. That is the only sure foundation for life. First of all we confess Him as Lord, and then, we do what He says. That is the formula for success in life.
The problem is that there are many who name the name of Christ, who do not obey Him. They say, "Lord, Lord," but they do not do what He says. Their lives are on a collision course with disaster, because we all have trials. When they come, they will do the wrong thing and fall flat. Many times, they will blame God for their fall, because they believe Jesus is Lord. However, if they do not do what He says, they will still lose the house. For you see, what we really believe is what we do. If we don't do it, we don't really believe in it. When Jesus gave us this picture of the house falling flat, He was warning us against disobedience.
Those whose houses are on the rock will still have the storms, but they will have the strength to weather the storm. However, it is not enough just to believe that Jesus died on the Cross for your sins and to ask Him to forgive you. Who would not want to have their sins forgiven? To be built on the rock, Jesus must be your Lord, and if He is Lord, you obey what He says. Then, your life will stand strong through whatever Satan can throw at you.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Ezekiel 40-41 and II Peter 3.
