Being of One Accord
The Book of Acts talks about the believers being "in one accord." That means to be unified by an agreement on God's will for our lives. Have you ever been a part of a group that was unified like that? It is one of the joys of life.
A sports team should be in one accord if they want to win games. They should work together to accomplish victory. There should not be selfish ambition, but unselfish sacrifice for the goal. There is no "I" in team.
A church should be in one accord to accomplish the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. Everyone should esteem others higher than themselves, so that all of the needs are met. There should not be a striving over personal preferences, but a submission to one another in love. Then, the world will be drawn to the church, and the family of God will live in joy.
Most of all, a marriage should be in one accord. In Genesis 2 the Lord calls it "one flesh." It is so much more than physical. It is two people who have become one. If you doubt that, think about John 17. Jesus said that it was His desire for the believers to be one with Him as He was one with the Father. Then, Ephesians 5 tells us that marriage is to be a picture of our relationship with Christ. Oneness should be the essence of both relationships. If not, there is a problem.
Have you been on a team where each player is only out for himself? It is discouraging. Have you been in a church where no one could agree on what the Lord wanted them to do? It is stressful. Have you been in a marriage where your spouse was pulling against you, instead of with you? It is a terrible drag. None of those is God's will. He is all about unity and interdependence.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 8-10 and Acts 8:26-40.
