May 22 - Psalms 20-22
One of the greatest blessings in life is to have a prayer answered and to see things work out the way we want them to in our lives. David refers to this in Psalms 20 and 21. It is almost like he is saying to everyone, " I hope you will experience what I have experienced in my life." Why was God so good to David. He gives us a clue in Psalm 20:6. God answers His anointed. The anointed was a term used for kings and prophets. It especially referred to Jesus. Jesus was The Anointed One. It means the person who is filled with the Holy Spirit and who lives in the power of the spirit. The oil of the anointing process was symbolic of the Spirit. Therefore, one who is anointed is filled with the Spirit. Today, Christians are commanded to be filled with the Spirit all the time. The Spirit leads us to want what God wants and to pray according to His will. Then, God will answer our prayers and give us the desires of our hearts, because our desires are His desires. David experienced this blessing in his life, and I pray that you will have your prayers answered as you live by His Spirit, as you trust in the Lord instead of horses and chariots.
Psalm 22 is a special Messianic Psalm because much of what it says applies to Jesus and His death for us. David may have thought it applied to him in his time of trouble, and it did in some ways, but the ultimate meaning of the Psalm is found in Jesus. Over and over we read things that happened to Jesus on the cross. He felt forsaken when our sins were placed on Him. (v1) The people told Him to save Himself. (v8) His bones were out of joint, and His heart melted within Him. (v14) His strength was dried up, and His tongue stuck to his jaws. (v15) They pierced His hands and feet, and you could see all of His bones. (v16,17) They cast lots for His clothes. (v18) It is a perfect description of Christ's death on the cross. God knew what was going to happen before it happened. This prophecy shows us the truth of the Bible, and the knowledge of God. It also shows us the inspiration of the Bible. However, it tells us something else, too. God did not hide from Christ, but He heard Him and delivered Him. (v24) All of this happened so a posterity could serve Him and tell others about Jesus. (v30,31) That is you and me as believers. How are you doing in telling others about Jesus?
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 23-26.
