The Living Bread

When people in Jesus' day spoke about bread, they were referring to the main food upon which they were dependent for keeping them alive and making them strong. They ate bread at every meal. They would dip it in sauces and eat a few side dishes, but bread was the staple. If they didn't have bread, they be very weak or even die.

That is why Jesus used bread as a way to describe Himself. (John 6:51) He said, "I am the Living Bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I will give for the life of the world also is My flesh." We need to digest this analogy so we can have a clear picture of Jesus and what He has done for us.

Jesus took on human flesh when He came down from heaven. He did this to reveal God to us. He is God incarnate. That way He would teach us about God and work miracles to show people the way to salvation. When we put our trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior, we are taking Him into our life, so He can give us eternal life. That is the ultimate nourishment for any person.

However, Jesus also said that He gave His body, the bread, for the life of the world. The wages of sin is death, so someone had to die for my sins and your sins. Since Jesus was the God/Man, and He lived a perfect, sinless life, He could give His life for us to pay for our sins. That is just what He did, and now, anyone who comes to know Him is washed clean from sin and ready for heaven. Without His body that would be impossible.
