Trying to Serve Two Masters
A servant has to do whatever his or her master tells them to do. There can be no hesitation in obeying, and certainly there can be no disobedience. It is the duty of a servant to be totally faithful to his or her master. Therefore, it is impossible for a servant to have two masters. That would set up a potential conflict, and the servant would be unable to do what both masters wanted at the same time.
Jesus used this analogy to get across a valuable truth that we all need to learn. (Luke 16:13) Jesus told us that no servant can serve two masters because he will either hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. No one can serve God and wealth. I am afraid there are many believers who are trying to serve God and wealth with very bad results.
God directs us, as Christians, to grow spiritually to become more like Jesus every day by walking in the Spirit's power and direction. Jesus is our Lord. He is our Master. We are His servants. If we fail to obey Jesus and the leadership of the Spirit for any reason, we are unfaithful, sinful servants. God can't bless us when we do that.
However, for many people money and possessions are their top priority. They make decisions based on how much money they can make and what they should use their money to do. They serve their job first and foremost because that is where their money comes from. They go places on weekends, so they can spend their money as they wish. All the while, they are neglecting the commands and leadership of Jesus for their lives. We must not allow that to happen. We must serve Jesus alone.
