The Role of a Prophet

There are a lot of preachers today, who claim to speak for the Lord. That is what the word "prophet" means, "one who speaks forth God's word." Therefore, they are claiming to be prophets of the Lord. However, we must not accept someone as a prophet, just because they claim that role, since there are many "false prophets" who will lead us in the wrong way. Jeremiah saw the same situation in his day. God gave him a warning for us, and He told us what to look for in a prophet of God. (Jeremiah 23:21,22) We need to hear what the Lord said to Jeremiah and pass it on to others around us.

A prophet is sent by God to do God's will and/or to deliver a specific message. False prophets go, but they are not sent by God. They speak, but God has not spoken to them. They go where they want to go, and they say what they want to say. In doing this they lead people astray. The role of a true prophet of God, who has stood in His council, is to enable others to hear His words and to turn people away from their evil ways and deeds. Therefore, we can tell if a person is a prophet of God, because he will rely on the Bible, God's Word. He will only speak things that are in line with the Word of God, and he will rebuke people for their sins. He will warn people of sinful attitudes and actions. This is a huge contrast to the false prophets of today, who seldom use God's Word, except to twist it for their purposes, and they never preach on sin and repentance. They only point to prosperity and tell feel good stories. Please, avoid those false prophets. Search out prophets who have been in the council of God, and they are sent out by God with a message from His Word.
