Seventy Years of Exile

God promised to lead His people to the Promised Land. He gave it to them forever. He made a covenant to be with them, as long as they obeyed Him and kept His commandments. Once the people came into the land, they ceased following God. They started following the ways of the people of the land. They worshiped idols, instead of only worshiping God. They broke their part of the covenant, and when God's mercy came to an end, He sent them into exile for 70 years in Babylon to serve the king of Babylon. (Jeremiah 25:11) This punishment from God teaches us a lot about the nature and character of God. Let's see what we can learn that will help us.

When we are disobedient to God, He gives us consequences in line with our sin. Here the people had failed to keep the Sabbath Year for 490 years. They did not allow the land to lie fallow every seven years. Therefore, God sent them out of the land. It became desolate, and the land was left uncultivated for the  seventy years, it had missed. God enforced His command to the people by the exile. Also, the people choice not to obey Him and serve Him. Instead, they followed the leaders and gods of other nations. That is why God forced them to go to Babylon and serve their kings. It was what they chose, so He gave it to them fully. He does the same for us if we decide to go our way, He lets us go, and He even gives us more of what we desire, so we see the sins we have committed. I pray that you are not rebelling against God right now, because you might get a long exile for your life and end up serving those who do not have your best interest at heart. Please, stay close to the Lord and serve Him with all of your heart.
