The Stumbling Block of their Iniquity

The people of Judah were trusting in everything, except the right thing. They had fallen for all of the false idols, and they were pursuing wealth. In the end these things could not help them at all. (Ezekiel 7:19) The Lord was the Only One who could have saved them from hunger, destruction, and death. Yet, they forsook the Lord for the things that the world around them told them were important. That led to their downfall. The same will be true for anyone today, as well.

Ezekiel called it "the stumbling block of their iniquity." He was referring to their love of money, and their desire to accumulate it in an effort to be secure in life and free from want. However, when the Babylonians attacked Jerusalem, the food was cut off. They were choked in the vise of their army. When that happened, their money was worthless. It could not be used to fight their enemy. They could not use it to escape from the city. They could not eat it to satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs, either. Therefore, they cast it into the streets like trash. There was no need to keep it. They had stumbled because they trusted money, not the Lord.

There are thousands of people doing the same thing in America today. They are rejoicing in the boom of the stock market. They are focusing on the higher wages, and the extra spending money in their pockets. However, what will happen if the economy crashes, and we run out of enough food for everyone? What will happen if an enemy infiltrates our defenses? Will their money be able to deliver them from hunger and death? Of course not. It is just the devil's stumbling block to keep people from turning to the Lord Jesus Christ for their protection and security. Please, do not let that happen to you, and try to help as many others as you can to avoid this trap.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Ezekiel 9-12.
