Appointed a Watchman

God came to Ezekiel in Babylon and appointed him to be a watchman for the people of Israel. Whenever God spoke a word of warning to Ezekiel for the people, he was to deliver it, whether it was for the wicked or the righteous. (Ezekiel 3:17) God had put Ezekiel in a special position to be able to warn the people. We are in much that same position today, as believers, in this sinful world.

Ezekiel was a prophet, as we saw in chapter 2 yesterday. Then, God added a specific charge to His mission. He commanded him to be like a watchman on a wall for a city. That person kept a lookout for any enemy armies or other threats, so he could warn the people in time to prepare. Now, I believe, we are like that watchman, because we have God's Word for us, the Bible. We have the Holy Spirit to teach us the Bible. Also, we have been charged by God to share His truth with the world around us and to teach believers. Therefore, we see the enemies clearly, and we know the dangers around us. That makes us responsible to those around us. If we do not share what we know, God will hold us accountable for failing to be the watchmen and watch-women we should be. The reason for this is evident. We are the salt of the earth and the light of the world now, so if we do not warn them, they will never know how to escape the enemy and live for the Lord Jesus.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Ezekiel 6-8.
