One Heart and a New Spirit

God's people had been so rebellious toward God that He had to drive them into exile in Babylon for 70 years. Then, He brought them back to Judah and Jerusalem as He had promised. They came back to rebuild the city and the temple. However, they had to experience a drastic change to be able to do that in God's way. That is why when they turned back to the Lord, He did a work in their hearts. He gave them one heart and a new spirit. The hard heart of stone they had before was replaced by a soft heart of flesh, so they would be open to the Lord and keep His statutes and rules and obey them. (Ezekiel 11:19, 20) That same basic change needs to take place in the hearts of God's people today.

As believers and church members, we should have one heart. That means we should have a supernatural unity that only comes by being right with God together. We should have a new spirit in us, because we are listening to the Lord and His Holy Spirit is in us to guide us. Then, we must have soft hearts to be obedient to whatever God tells us. Then, the church could and would accomplish the work of God in His way, like the people of Judah did when they rebuilt the walls, the city, and the temple of the Lord. I would urge each of us to pray for God to send us such a revival today. It is the only hope of the church and for the world around us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Ezekiel 13-16.
