The Shepherd and His Sheep

The Bible uses the analogy of God being the Shepherd and His people being like sheep over and over again because it is so relevant. We are so much like sheep, so defenseless and ignorant of what is best to do. To survive and thrive in life, we must allow the Shepherd to lead us like a flock.(Psalm 78:52) Take a moment to consider this truth with me this morning.

Jesus told us that without Him, we can do nothing.(John 15:5) I believe that means we do not have the power to do anything that brings good fruit apart from staying close to Him and being empowered by Him. We can't repel Satan without the whole armor of God.(Ephesians 6:11) However, with the help of our Shepherd we can defeat Satan every time. Truly, we are helpless sheep, and we must have our Shepherd, or we will be ineffective in our lives.

Also, have you noticed how we need each other? We need the flock. The church is a flock. Jesus is our Shepherd. The pastor is the under-shepherd. We need to be led as a group, so that we can experience God together and be secure in Him.

Being led by the Lord is such a joy, and life with the Shepherd and the flock is so fulfilling. I pray that we all will apply this truth every day and find real life.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 79-82.
