Belonging

It is important for us, as humans, to feel a sense of belonging to someone or to something. After all, God said it was not good for us to alone. Belonging fulfills that need not to be alone. Solomon's wife understood marriage as belonging to one another.(Song of Solomon 6:3) We need to understand that belonging. Also, we must come to see that Jesus wants us to belong to Him, and He wants to belong to us, too.

To whom do you belong? If your answer is that you belong to no one, that is a pretty lonely way to pass through life. You might think it is safe, or it is good to be independent, but God did not create us for independence, but interdependence. We have been made in His image, so we can enter and fulfill relationships. The best relationships are permanent ones like marriage. When we give ourselves in marriage, we become one with the other person. We belong to them. We meet their needs in a human way, and they meet ours. It is a beautiful experience.

In a spiritual sense the same is true for knowing Jesus. We do not just believe in Him, we belong to Him. We are married to Him. It is permanent. We become His, and He is ours. He meets our needs fully, and we enjoy living for Him. We belong to The Beloved One. That is the best relationship of all. Without belonging to Him, we are truly alone and needy. If you don't belong to Him today, I pray you will give yourself to the One who truly loves you and will belong to you forever if you will give in to Him as Lord of all.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Song of Solomon 8 and Isaiah 1-3.
