The Lord's Delight

We can tell a lot about a person by what causes them delight. I am always amazed that some people delight in wearing all black clothes that have a skull and demonic images on them. I wonder why that delights them. It is the same way with those who like horror movies. Then, there are those whose main delight is food, or maybe it is a particular sport. All of these things show that their heart is not on people or on the Lord, but on things.

So it was pretty significant to me when I read about God's delight. He owns everything, and He can have anything that delights Him. (Psalm 147:11) However, the Lord's delight is in those who fear Him, those who put their hope in His unfailing love. Isn't that amazing? God delights in those of us who have put our trust in Him, so that we worship and respect Him with great awe. His delight is for us who put our hope in His unfailing love. His delight is people whom He created in His image who have a relationship with Him.

I believe that we, as believers, are the Lord's delight because He loves all people, but it is a delight for Him that we would choose to love Him back. That is why He made us with a free will. Even though He doesn't need anything to be complete, and He doesn't need our love in that sense, it delights Him to have that love relationship with anyone who fears Him and puts their hope in His unfailing love. He desires to show them that He can be trusted to deliver on all of His promises to those who put their trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior.

So, when we see what gives God delight, I hope it makes us realize that the Lord should be our delight, first and foremost. Since He delights in us, we ought to delight in our relationship with Him more than anyone or anything else. Also, I believe it should teach us to delight in people, not in the things of this world. We, too, should delight in those who love us back and who trust us. We ought to spend our time and energy with them, and pour into them, instead of the things of this world. If we will do those two things, our lives will be very joyful and fulfilling.
