Don't Put Confidence in Powerful People
I believe it is always a temptation for us to put our confidence in people, instead of trusting the Lord like we should. I think this is because we can see people, and we can't see God. We can see what other people have accomplished, but it is harder to see what God is doing around us sometimes. Therefore, when we see powerful people who have accomplished a lot in their lives, we are drawn to put our confidence in them to do some things that will help us in our lives. The Bible is clear that we should not do that.
David was a powerful person, a king. I am sure he knew other kings and other powerful people. God inspired David to give us wisdom in this matter. (Psalm 146:3,5) "Don't put your confidence in powerful people; there is no help there.... But joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is the the Lord their God." That is sound counsel for all of us today and always.
People will let you down. People will make good decisions, and then they will begin to compromise. Any help that comes from other people is at best, temporary. In fact, it is just what David said, "no help." It might be what we think we want at that time, but it is not what we need. It is almost always not God's will. It could end up harming us in the long run. Therefore, do not put confidence in politicians and other leaders, or powerful people in your family or community.
We must trust God and Him alone. He is the Only One who will always help us at the right time and in the right way, as we trust Him sincerely and completely. If we try to trust in people and in God, we are not really trusting God to be our Helper, like David said we should. He is not really our hope. Yes, God may use other people to help us, but we must be looking to Him to see that is what He wants for us. Then, we accept what God gives us, and we don't try to get our way by trusting in powerful people.
