Teach Me, Lord

I don't know about you, but there are a lot of things that I need someone else to teach me. I can read a book or research on the Internet, but even if I know the facts, I need more explanation and instruction. It is one thing to know what needs to be done. It is another thing to know how to do it. I believe that is why we need good teachers. Of course, God is the best Teacher.

David had experienced that need in his life. He knew just what he needed to do. (Psalm 143:10) He asked God to teach him to do His will, because He was his God. He asked the gracious Holy Spirit to lead him forward on a firm footing as he learned and did God's will. There is so much wisdom in that prayer. I believe it is a good prayer for all of us. Let me tell you why I think that.

As Christians, most of us know God's will. I believe 9o+% of God's will is written down for us in the Bible. How many of us are doing everything we know the Bible tells us to do? We learn the rest of God's will as we pray and listen to His Spirit speak to us about things like where to go to college, who to marry, what job to have, where to go to church, etc. In each case we need for God to teach us "to do" His will, not just to know it. Doing God's will takes discipline and the stamina to set our priorities and keep them every day.

We can't do that by ourselves. We need God's teaching, and we need the leadership of the Holy Spirit. He is God's gracious Spirit. He knows we can't do God's will without Him, but He comes along side of us and bears us along to do it well. He makes sure we take the right way and stay on firm footing. When we are learning from God's teaching and following the Spirit's leadership, it is very possible to do God's will consistently. We won't be perfect, but we will be constantly doing God's will more and more.
