Throwing Away Idols
If we allow ourselves, as Christians, to be carried away by various idols, our relationship with God will be greatly damaged. Jesus said it Himself. None of us can serve two masters. We will hate the one and love the other. Therefore, we can't have any idols in our lives, or we will be attempting to worship God and something else. We must ask the Spirit to show us any idols and to empower us to throw them away once and for all.
Isaiah foretold a day when every person will throw away his idols of silver and gold - sin, which their hands had made for themselves. (Isaiah 31:7) Those carved images represented false gods. They actually worshiped the image which they had made with their hands, thinking the god would bless them. We might laugh at that kind of idolatry, but we should stop and look at ourselves first.
We can have all kinds of idols today. For some people their job is their idol. They put their work responsibilities before the Lord. They neglect to spend time with God because of time at work or being too tired from their work. We must not let that happen to us. Our idol could even be any family relationship that comes between us and God. Family is very important, but God must always come first.
Then, some have the idols of money and possessions. Some people will do whatever they need to do to make more money and have more possessions. Then, they use that money on themselves, and pile up more and more possessions, which take their time and resources from God. Of course, recreation can take us away from God, too. We must stop and take stock of our lives to see if we have any idols. If we find one or more, we must throw them away immediately, and give God our full devotion.
