Like a City Broken Down
Many people go through life with very little personal discipline. They exist at the whim of their feelings or the circumstances around them. This makes their life very chaotic and hectic. It is very difficult to get anything worthwhile done, because of their lack of control. They live in frustration, and when they look back they have all kinds of regrets for the things they did not do. What a miserable life!
The Bible makes a point about this situation that gives us a good insight. We need to really take what it says to heart. (Proverbs 25:28) "Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls." Just soak in that word picture for a minute. How would it be to live in a city where everything was broken down, and there were no walls to keep out the enemies? See what God means for us to learn?
We must learn to exercise control over our own spirit. After all, it is our spirit. No one else can control it as it should be controlled. We must learn God's Word and discipline ourselves to do just what it says in a daily discipline. In order for that to happen, we have to say yes to the right things and no to the wrong things. We must rule our spirit so it will rule over our flesh and the outside influences around us.
We can't just do what feels good. We must not go with the crowd and do what everyone else is doing. We must train ourselves by the power of the Holy Spirit to walk with Christ each day, fulfill our family responsibilities, and do our jobs well. Then, we will build up what is broken down. We will have walls to keep out the harmful enemies Satan will send at us. We will have an abundant life, instead of frustration.
