The Cost of Commitment

There are a lot of things in our lives that require us to make a commitment of some kind. When we take a job, we have to commit to do everything the boss asks us to do. It takes a lot of our time and energy. Marriage is a huge commitment. We decide to love each other, no matter what comes, until death parts us. Then, when we trust Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are making an eternal commitment to Him.

Paul made that commitment to Christ, and he was very serious about it. Even when the people and prophets were warning him that he would be bound and arrested for his trust in Jesus, he continued doing God's will. (Acts 21:13) Paul asked the people what they were doing weeping and breaking his heart by trying to keep him from doing God's will. He said that he was ready not only to be bound, but to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. That was Paul's commitment.

What is your level of commitment to Jesus? Is there anything that would keep you from doing God's will? We all need to ask ourselves these questions. The day could come when we would be put in prison for being a follower of Jesus and holding to the teachings of the Bible. We have to be prepared for that, and make sure our commitment is strong enough to stand up for our Lord.

Of course, we could even be called upon to die for Jesus. We have to be ready, like Paul, to show our faith in Jesus as Lord of all by being willing to die for Him. After all, He died for us to have eternal life. Why would we not be committed to Him enough to die for His name? I believe that is what we will do, if Jesus is actually the Lord of our life.
