Doing Business with Others
We all engage in business with others in various ways. It doesn't mean that we have to own a business or sell a product or service for that to happen. We can sell land or a used car or anything else we own. When we make such a transaction, what is our mindset? Are we trying to make as much money as possible, or are we trying to treat the other person fairly by what we are charging? Our mindset doesn't just tell us about our morals and character. It reveals the level of our fear of God. Why would I say that? God tells us over and over again in His Word that we should be honest about we what we sell, and we should charge a fair price. (Leviticus 25:17) That is why God told Moses to exhort the people to show their fear of God by not taking advantage of other people. He was the Lord their God, and that was His command. So, what are we going to learn from this.
God is not pleased with us when we take advantage of another person. We can take advantage of others when they have a big need, but they don't have the money to meet that need. We might step in and charge them interest on a loan, so they can have the money, but we will make money, too. God says that is not a good way to do business. We ought to lend to them in love, not try to make a profit. If we sell some land, we should only charge what the land is worth, and we should not cover up any flaws that would lower the value. Of course, that is being dishonest by not telling the whole truth. Of course, the same principles are in effect when we sell a house or a car. If we really fear God, we will treat people right, not take advantage of them. Also, if we fear Him, we will trust that when we are doing business in His will, He will take care of us, too, because of our righteous actions and attitudes. Just think how much better this world would be if everyone did business according to God's principles, and they did it in the fear of God.
