Wisdom and Its Companions
How do we know what to do in all of the situations of life? Some of us just ask other people what to do each time. Others do research online or from books. Still others of us think we know enough to simply decide without any help. The problem is that all of these commonly used methods don't work well, at all. There is only one infallible way to know what we ought to do in every situation. That is what the entire book of Proverbs is about. We need wisdom, God's wisdom. Solomon was inspired by God to write these things for us, so we could see the worth of wisdom. (Proverbs 8:11-12) Wisdom is better than jewels. In fact, nothing desirable can equal wisdom. The reason for its worth is that wisdom shares a home with shrewdness, and it has knowledge and discretion, too. Wisdom is a package of what we all need to face life well.
Wisdom comes from God, because it is His way of thinking about everything. Real wisdom is unique with God, since He alone is perfect and has all understanding. When we seek wisdom from God, and we find it, then we can see things God's way and act accordingly. Then, things go well for us. Part of wisdom is shrewdness, which is the ability to figure out problems and to do what is necessary even in dealing with difficult people and situations. We all need to be shrewd in our dealings in a nice, kind way. Then, when we have wisdom, we receive knowledge, too. Knowledge is not just learning facts, but it is knowing how the facts fit together as God designed. Having shrewdness and knowledge leads us to have discretion, too. We know when and how to say and do what needs to be done each time. What a blessing this is to be able to be discreet in what we say and do. I trust we can all see the worth of wisdom from the insights in these verses. I pray we will seek wisdom more than anything else, by knowing the Lord Jesus and His Word so the Holy Spirit can impart wisdom and its companions to us as we need them.
