Seeing God
There is a great debate about what the Bible says about seeing God. The Bible clearly says that no man has seen God at any time. God told Moses he could not live if he looked at Him, so God hid Moses in the rocks and allowed him to see just a trace of His presence as He passed by. Other times, the Bible declares that people saw God. Isaiah said that he saw the Lord "high and lifted up" on His throne, even though he did not give and exact description of God. The last factor is that John 4 affirms that God is Spirit, that He does not have a physical body. Therefore, I believe we as humans can see the glory of God, the presence of God, but not the body of our Father in heaven. However, after saying all of that, I believe we can all see God, and we will see God clearly, if we have open hearts to see what He is revealing to us of Himself. That is what happened to Job through all of his trials of pain and loss. (Job 42:5) Before the trials, Job had just heard reports about God and learned about Him from others. However, through the trails and God coming to speak directly to him, Job came to see God in a very personal and powerful way. I believe that was the ultimate reason for his suffering, and it is what God wants for each of us today.
Seeing God is not something we do with our physical eyes very often, if ever. However, God shows Himself to us regularly in His actions toward us. In fact, He uses everything that happens to us as a motivation for us to see Him in a new and fresh way. When we are healed, we see Him as the Healer. When He gives us what we need in life, we see Him as the Provider. When we see God work miracles, we see Him as God-Almighty. If we are listening and watching for what He is doing in our lives, we come to see Him better and better. Thus, we know who He is to a greater degree all of the time. At some point we come to see that He is able, just like the three Hebrew men who were thrown in the fiery furnace. Finally, we see as Job saw that God is always Righteous in everything He does, and we rest in Him for our daily needs and for eternity. I pray that each of us has seen God, and we will keep seeing Him here in this world, until we worship around His throne in heaven, beholding His full glory.
