Sinning Against God

Most people think about doing right or doing wrong. We are somewhat concerned that we do what is morally right. However, if we have a strong desire, we will forget about the morality question and go ahead and do what we want to do. That is a terrible way to think. This is especially true for Christians, since we have the Holy Spirit to convict us of sin before we decide to do the wrong thing. He tells us, but He doesn't force us to follow God's way. Therefore, many believers decide to go ahead and sin. That was not the case for Joseph in Egypt. He was a slave for Potiphar an official of Pharaoh. He was trusted by his master and put in charge of everything in his house. Then, Potiphar's wife tried to seduce him to sleep with her. Joseph refused, and he explained why. (Genesis 39:9) Joseph knew that no one in the house was greater than him. His master had not withheld anything from him, except his wife. Therefore, Joseph knew that he would be committing an immense evil to violate his wife. Also, and even more importantly, he knew he would be sinning against God. That should always be before our mind, as it was before Joseph's mind.

Sin is very serious. God hates sin. As Christians, we are to walk with the Lord and stay cleansed from our sins by confessing them and repenting of them, so that we do not keep committing the same sins over and over. God will give us the wisdom and power to do this, but we have to make the decision that we will not sin against God. This is true in all situations. Even if we think that no one else will ever know about what we do, we must be determined not to do it. That would be a sin against our Lord, no matter if it was a secret sin. However, there are very few, if any, secret sins, because God is determined to bring our sins into the light, so that we will see just how bad they are. This is why we need to have the same convictions that Joseph had. We must know that sin is an immense evil and that we never want to sin against God and have our sin harm our relationship with our Lord. Then, we will be in the position to do the right thing, whenever there is a temptation to sin.
