The Service of Song

Ever since the time of David, about 1,000 BC, there have been those who were called by God to bring the service of song in the house of the Lord. What does that say to us? Music is very important to God and to the worship of God. David appointed part of the tribe of Levi to fulfill this ministry, and they continued all through the time of the temple of Solomon. (I Chronicles 6:31) The service of song was for the Lord and for us. David started it when the ark was brought into the tabernacle in the wilderness. God resided above the ark in the Holy of Holies. We can learn a lot form this practice, and we can continue to benefit from the service of song today.

Music is a gift from God by which we can express the commitment of our hearts to the Lord and pour out our praise and thanksgiving to Him. The Lord lives in each of us, as believers, now, not in a building. However, when the saints come together to worship the Lord and attend to His Word, there is a special power that enters our corporate worship. As the Spirit fills each of us, He fills the place, and our worship ascends to the Father and the Son. The Bible says that God "inhabits" the praises of His people. He shows up when we sincerely praise Him. We should be thankful for those who labor in the service of song, both to play and to sing. They are called and gifted by God, just like David was. We all benefit from their gifts and calling. Just think the void that would develop if we no longer had songs for our worship of the Lord. Just think of the special moments we have experienced as others sang or as we sang to the Lord. God is to be praised and thanked for instituting the service of song for us.
