Our Portion and Inheritance

God chose Aaron's family to be the priests of Israel. It was a great honor and a huge responsibility. The rest of the tribe of Levi were helpers in their work in the tabernacle and the temple. The Lord took care of all of them, but He did not give Aaron and his family any inheritance of land in Canaan like He gave all of the other families. In fact, God did not give them anything to own as their portion. (Numbers 18:20) However, He did much better for Aaron's family. God was their portion and their inheritance. What a blessing! What a truth for us to consider today!

Many people are preoccupied with earthly possessions. Their focus in life is upon having land and a home they can call their own. Then, they are trying to become financially independent, so they do not have to work, or they can retire early. Their whole focus is on this world. God does not want us, as Christians, to have such a focus. As I have reminded us before, now we are all priests before the Lord, if we are Christians. Our eyes should be on the Lord, not this world. He is our portion and our inheritance. What could be better. Even while we live in this material world, we can live with the assurance that we have everything we need, because we belong to the Lord and we are joint-heirs with Christ of all God owns.(Romans 8:17) No matter what happens with the economy or our health, everything will be just fine, because our inheritance is to be with the Lord in heaven, in just the place He has prepared for us for eternity. I pray we will all rejoice that, as believers, the Lord is our portion and our inheritance.
