The Power of Unity
We would think that people would have learned their lesson after the flood and stayed close to God, doing His will. That was not the case, because of human nature. As the people grew in numbers, they moved to the plain of Shinar. They decided to build a city for themselves, not for God. ((Genesis 11:4) As a part of that city they were planning to build a tower which reached into heaven, so they would make a name for themselves. (Sounds like pride to me.) They wanted to do this, because they knew otherwise they would be scattered over the face of the whole earth. Even from the beginning there has been power in unity. However, the results of that unity can be positive or negative.
All around us today we see people who become unified around a cause, and their movement grows stronger and stronger. As they involve more and more people, they are able to accomplish much. Just like God realized with the Tower of Babel, if something doesn't stop them, they will be able to do almost whatever they put their minds to. This is true no matter how destructive or evil their ideas may be. There is great power in unity that is motivated by pride, the desires of the flesh, and the direction of Satan against the things of God. Therefore, we need to pray for God to stop this type of unity just as He did in Babel.
On the other hand, there is even more power in the unity of believers, who are guided and empowered by the Spirit of God. We see that power in the book of Acts and in the Awakenings that have happened down through time. If God's people will come together and pray, turn from our sins, and cry out to heaven, He will hear our prayers, forgive our sins, and heal our land. (II Chronicles 7:14) That is what we need today. We need the power of unity to pervade the faithful, and we need to make a name for the Lord, calling people to build His kingdom here in this world. I pray you will join me in this quest before it is too late.
