A Train of Hallelujahs

God is worthy of praise for every one of His perfect attributes. However, we have a hard time knowing how to praise the Lord, at times. I know we try, but often our attempts are feeble. We do much better at thanking God. What is the difference? We praise God for who He is, and we thank God for what He has done. It is easy to begin praising God and then to slip into thanking Him, without going back to our praise. The psalmist did not have that problem. When the psalmist pondered God's love-in-action and His goodness-in-action, he and those with him at the temple broke out in a train of hallelujahs for the name of God. (Psalm 48:9,10) I believe this word picture is a great way for us to remember how to praise the Lord as we should.

Have you ever been at a railroad crossing waiting for the train to pass by? For me it seems like the end of the train will never come. It is just one car after another for a long time. We should seek to praise the Lord in a long line of praises that magnify His holy name whenever and wherever we hear His name spoken or we think about His glorious name. That is possible, if we will consider His love-in-action. Just think of all of the attributes of God which are practical ways that His love impacts us, and praise Him for each of those ways. Then, think of all of His goodness-in-action and do the same thing about all of the ways we see God's righteousness in action. These things should evoke a train of hallelujahs to God, and if not, we need to check our hearts, because something is very wrong when God's children can't praise the Lord as we should.
