Saving Your Life
Jesus gave us some statements that really make us think. Then, He made other statements that were completely clear. I think He had a good reason for both. We need to hear His clear principles, and we need to grapple with the ones which make us think. When Jesus spoke to His disciples about wanting to save their lives, He definitely wanted us to think about how to do that. It is clear that we can't do it ourselves. If we try, we will lose our life, and it will be gone forever. However, if we lose our life because of Him and the gospel, we will save it forever. (Mark 8:35) Let's take some time to meditate on this truth.
People will try whatever medicines or surgeries they can take to save their lives and live a little longer on this earth. Also, people are careful not to do dangerous things, so they do not lose their lives. However, if we were to live to be 120 years old because of our efforts to save our lives, we would still lose our life one day. We can't keep it forever by taking such steps. The only way to save our life forever, is to lose it for the Lord and the gospel. Yes, I think that means being willing to do whatever Jesus tells us to do, even if that leads to our death. However, I think it also applies to simply and totally giving ourselves to Jesus, because we realize our life is not ours to keep, but He can keep it very well. It is entrusting our life to the One who died and rose again for us, so that we live for Him completely. Then, He saves our life, and we will spend eternity with Him in heaven when we die physically. In other words, trust Jesus with your life, follow Him, and He will give you real life forever.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Mark 9-11.
