The Lord put Saul to Death
We do not often think about God putting someone to death. However, the Bible records many instances where just that happened. In King Saul's case God put him to death, because he did not keep the Lord's commands, and he consulted a medium when he should have only consulted the Lord for guidance. (I Chronicles 10:13,14) This was a tragedy, but it was totally preventable. If Saul would have been faithful to the Lord, he would not have been killed. We need to see what we can learn from this and other cases where God put people to death in the Bible.
Acts 6 gives us the account of how God killed Ananias and Sapphira for lying to Him. They told the Lord and the church that they had given all of the money from the sale of their property, when they only gave part of the money. This was done to make them look good and to receive God's blessing. However, they were struck down by the Lord for their deceit, so it would not spread to the rest of the church. We must be careful never to try to make ourselves look good by trying to deceive others and lying to God.
Then, the people in the church at Corinth who did not participate in the Lord's Supper in a very righteous way were put to death by the Lord, while others were made sick. (I Corinthians 11:30) This shows how seriously God takes our worship. If we do it in vain, it could result in our death, or in sickness. God deserves all of our worship and genuine devotion, and when we fail to be faithful in that way, He could kill us, so we do not influence others in the wrong way. These are just two of the many examples of God's anger against sin that led to the death of individuals.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Chronicles 11-13.
