Powerful Praises
King Jehoshaphat was a man of great faith in God. He was not perfect. None of us are perfect. However, He depended on God, and when God sent him a word through the prophets, he believed it and acted on what God said to him. Since God told Jehoshaphat that He was going to fight the battle for Israel, the king selected a choir to go in front of the army into the battle. When they began to shout and sing praises, God routed the enemies without the army engaging at all. (II Chronicles 20:22) There is a powerful lesson in this for God's people today, even this Lord's Day.
When we go to church to worship the Lord, why are we singing praises? Is it just because we are supposed to sing the songs? Are we simply going along with everyone else? I do not believe those are good reasons for us to praise the Lord, and I believe that type of praise is not powerful, like that of the people in Jehoshaphat's day. Whenever we sing a song of praise in our times of worship, we should be personally praising the Lord for what He has promised us. Each praise song has a focal attribute of God or promise from His Word. We should receive that message and sing praises from our hearts to Him, because we trust what He has said and His perfect nature. Then, when an entire congregation comes together to sing with individual purpose and collective vision of God's greatness and powerful promises, our praises are powerful, because God rewards our faith and responds to our praises.
Tomorrow, I intend to read II Chronicles 20:22.
