An Appeal for Unity
Paul was very clear in speaking to the members of the church, the body of Christ, that there should be a supernatural unity among the believers. Jesus made the same appeal in His prayer in John 17. It ought to be what sets Christians apart from the rest of the people of this world, and our unity should draw people to know the Lord Jesus. That is why Paul started his letter to the church in Corinth with an appeal to unity. (I Corinthians 1:10) He had received a report from a member of the church that the members were divided, and that disturbed the apostle who had founded the church. Let's listen to the points of his appeal and apply them to our own church family.
Paul began by calling for the believers to all agree. We might think that this is impossible or not necessary, but it is very possible and important. Since we are to all follow the Lord Jesus and have His mind in us, we should be in agreement on what to believe, what to do, and how to do it. Then, Paul declares that there should be no divisions among them. Cliques and factions have no place in the body of Christ. Finally, we are to be untied in the same mind and the same judgment. If we are thinking with the mind of Christ, we will have the same mind and our judgment on issues will agree, too. That is a great statement of the supernatural unity we should have in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Corinthians 2-5
