Sorrow or Laughter?
If you had your choice, which would you choose, sorrow or laughter? Since we live in a world that is so focused on pleasure and on being happy, most people would probably say laughter. However, Solomon gave us an excellent insight on this from the Lord. (Ecclesiastes 7:3) Let's think about how the Lord would answer this question.
God says that sorrow is better than laughter, because by a sad countenance or face the heart is made better. Happiness and pleasure do nothing to impact the heart in a lasting way. Happiness is fleeting. It is just fun, but no substance. Sorrow lasts, and it makes a lasting impression on our hearts. We learn about the Lord from sorrow, because we listen to Him more closely. We learn about ourselves, because we see how strong or how weak we are. However, the main benefit of sorrow is that we become stronger when our hearts are made better. Then, we are able to have joy in the good times and in the sad times, because we have found that we can count on the Lord to heal the hurts and to sustain us through the pain, until we get His comfort and experience victory.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Ecclesiastes 8-11.
