A Wife with Wisdom and Kindness
Proverbs 31 is known for its description of a virtuous wife. There is a long list of qualities that define her virtues. I want to focus on 2 of them. (Proverbs 31:10, 26) What would you say are the qualities of a virtuous wife? Which do you think are the most important? Let me share about these 2, and you can see what you think.
A virtuous wife opens her mouth with wisdom. There is a lot in that sentence. She does not open her mouth with gossip, because God hates spreading half-truths and being malicious with words. She does not speak rashly, because God's wisdom leads us to listen before we answer. She does not open her mouth just with her opinion. She opens her mouth to share God's perspective on matters. Wisdom comes only from God, because to be wise is to see things as God does. It is to see the facts, and then to be able to understand them correctly according to His truth and His ways. A virtuous wife speaks with wisdom, or she does not speak.
A virtuous wife has the law of kindness on her tongue. Her tongue is not used to destroy, but to heal. Her tongue does not cut people down, but builds them up. Her tongue expresses wisdom in a way that is loving and merciful. The virtuous wife realizes that kindness is a law of God, not just a good idea. Since kindness is in her heart, because she knows the Lord so well, she allows her kindness to flow out to others.
Who would not benefit greatly from having such a wife? Again, I praise the Lord for giving me a virtuous wife, who has these two virtues and many more.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Ecclesiastes 1-3.
