False Assumptions

Sometimes, we assume things that are false. Most of the time, it is because what we assume would be logical. However, not all things that seem logical are true. We must check out logic to verify it. In the case of people, great people are not always wise, nor do older people always understand justice. (Job 32:9) We learn this truth from Job's younger friend, Elihu.

Greatness comes to people for many reasons. Perhaps, they have great talents, so that they can sing well. Maybe, they have a personality that causes people to follow them. They may even have been born into a wealthy family. None of these things cause people to be wise, just because they are great. We need to be very careful to whom we listen, because we hear from great people all of the time, who are very foolish, Only those great people who know the Lord, fear Him, and have applied their hearts to know His wisdom are truly wise.

Older people can have a very false view of life, even though they have lived many years. They can have a skewed viewpoint of justice, because of their upbringing or their culture. Perhaps, they went to a very liberal school that taught them a justice that was contrary to the Word of God. Whatever the cause, we must not assume that older people understand justice. If we make that assumption, we could be making a false assumption, so that we are led astray.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 33-35.
